Watching a movie is a great way to spend a couple hours with your friends and family. The theater provides such a simple, yet immerseful experience, surrounding you with sounds and mesmerizing graphics that take you away from the world around you, and into the lives of your favorite celebrities. The only problem is: what do you choose? There are hundreds of world-renowned movies released each month. To solve this problem, we asked many students what their favorite movie was this summer. Our results found that the most popular movie was Ocean’s 8.
Ocean’s 8 is a sequel of the award winning movie, Ocean’s 11. Although Ocean’s 11 already has two sequels (Ocean’s 12 and Ocean’s 13), this movie has a new spin to it. Straying from the all male cast of the previous films, Ocean’s 8 features an all female cast. The film was released on June 5th, making a total of $41,607,378 during opening weekend. Some of the actresses in this star-studded cast include Sandra Bullock, Rihanna, Cate Blanchett, Anne Hathaway, Sarah Paulson, Mindy Kaling, Helena Bonham Carter, and Awkwafina.
Sandra Bullock appears as Debbie Ocean, the sister of the legendary conman Danny Ocean from the original movie. After her release from prison, she gathers a team of irrepressible criminals to fulfill her plan, which she devised for nearly six years. Their goal for this heist of the century is to steal a necklace worth over 150 million dollars from New York City’s Annual Met Gala. The brazen elements of crime in this movie sustain a thrill in the audience as they watch the complex plan of their heist play out. Stellar cinematography and amazing costume designs are excellently incorporated demonstrated throughout the film, with comedic moments and dialogue also adding to overall experience.
Although the viewers become engulfed in the atmosphere of the scenes and see more action from strong female leads, Ocean’s 8 has received some criticism. The most common complaint is that the plot is predictable and boring. However, many critics compare Ocean’s 8 to the Ocean’s 11 series, which in comparison can get a bit repetitive. The fans of the franchise were enthusiastic upon watching the new movie with its female cast, but disappointed with the bland plot. Ocean’s 8 is more focused on its female characters for the sake of simply having the female representation, rather than providing more thought-provoking events or plot twists in the story. The movie most likely won people’s attention and gained popularity from its cast of famous celebrities, but seeing the predictable story play out brought low ratings and criticism.
